The Purpose Behind Our Passion:

Change is Written on the Wall

Self Litigants are paving the way forward with Case Law the courts are BOUND by.

Having dealt with the “impossibility” of the legal field in New Zealand and acknowledging the fact that the demand for legal representation has out grown the supply [and affordability for most]- it is essential for people to have access to resources and practical effective guides to be able to represent themselves competently in court.

Founder and owner of “Ponsonby Chambers” , Taz Dunstan has been quoted as an experienced self litigant, representing her cases at every level of the New Zealand courts:

“It would be great to have more advocacy of people, particularly McKenzie friends, people that have gone through the process with practical experience but aren’t formally qualified, to say, you know, ‘These are your rights, this is the book of law, these are your options available, this is a standard process, this is what you can expect.’” She said “people shouldn’t feel like they are not going to have a fair go if they can’t afford for their rights to be heard in court”.

Note, Michelle Kidd was the ONLY known Court supported advocate working exclusively out of Auckland District Court- with her own office. She was championed by the court for “giving the judges a good Growling”

What was concealed was the Fact the “Trust” that was set up to pay her was chaired by Judge Pippa Cunningham and Judge Sinclair of: Te Rangimarie Charitable Trust. [As named in the article by NZ Herald]

Ponsonby Chambers is currently in the process of having a legitimately independent “Mackenzie friend” service set up nation wide for north and south island incorporating Tikanga and Maori principals and values to help protect the people of all cultural backgrounds before the courts, as Michelle Kidd stated: “The changes I have tried to make are not only individual changes but also changes to our way of doing justice. We have to acknowledge that quite often justice is not working.”

[One must ask the question, if a member of the public (who was not funded by Judges) stated this fact, would they have been praised- as Ms Kidd was, or placed in contempt of court and subsequently imprisoned?]
